Calculation of CO2 utilization in cereals using plant growth bioregulators Biolan and Radostim

Ukraine today has a following structure of areas under crops:

  • cereals and leguminous crops ..................................... 15565 thousand hectares (57.2 %),
  • industrial .................................................................... 7549.7 thous. hectares (27.0 %),
  • fodder ........................................................................ 2348.6 thous. hectares (8,5 % )
  • potato and vegetables ................................................. more than 2 million hectares (7.3 %).

Total area of cereals and leguminous crops is 15.56 million hectares:

  • wheat (winter and spring) is sowed on .......................... 36.7 %,
  • corn .......................................................................... 30.3 %,
  • barley (winter and spring) ............................................ 22.1 %,
  • others ....................................................................... only 10.9 %.

Research of efficiency of plant growth bioregulators (PGB) Biolan and Radostim have been carried out in 2006-2010 on the basis of research stations of NAASU which are located in zones of Polissia, Forest-steppe and Northern Steppe:

  1. Kirovohrad Institute AIP (now - the Kirovograd state agricultural research station of the Institute of agriculture of a steppe zone).Soil of test field - middling loamy black soil.
  2. Podillia agricultural research station of the Ternopil IAIP (now - the Ternopil state agricultural research station of the Institute of forages and agriculture of Podillia). Soil - deep low-humic black soil.
  3. Chernihiv institute of AIP (now - the Institute of agricultural microbiology and agroindustrial manufacture). Soil - derno-podzolic sandy soil.
  4. Vavilov Poltava institute AIP (now - the Poltava state agricultural research station of the Institute of swine rearing and agroindustrial manufacture).Soil - typical low-humicloamy soil.
  5. Smelaand Drabiv test fields of the Cherkasy institute AIP (now - the Cherkasy state agricultural research station NSC “Institute of agriculture NAASU”).Soils – degraded loamy black soil and deep low-humic black soil.



The Department of agro resources of the Institute of water problems and land improvement NAAS of Ukraine was the co-ordinator of works.

Experiments were carried out on winter and spring wheat, spring barley, buckwheat, corn, soybean, sunflower, winter and spring rapeseed, sugar beet and potato. A technique and schemes of the tests were common for research institutes.

It was planned studying of efficiency of plants growth regulators Radostim and Biolan separately and in a combination with fertilizers, plant-protecting agents, biological nitrogen-fixing and phosphate-mobilizing products.

Research showed that application of plant growth regulators Radostim and Biolan is result in growth of yields on the average by 14-15 % with a high recoupment of expenses.

CARBON UTILIZATION BY CEREALS WITH APPLICATION OF PLANT GROWTH BIOREGULATORS (in conversion to carbon dioxide)

Plant biomass (overground and underground parts) is a basis of СО2 absorption from atmosphere under sun light action and photo-synthetic activity of plants.

x CО2 + y Н2О + sun energy = Сх (Н2О) y + х О2

Approximately 50% of СО2 that is absorbed by plants is spent for breath and comes back in atmosphere. Other 50% forms the biomass during a year.

The average elementary structure of dry vegetative mass is (in %): carbon- 45; oxygen- 42; hydrogen - 6,5, nitrogen- 1,5 and ash- 5.

Calculation procedure of СО2 accumulation by crops

Calculation of СО2 utilization during cultivation of cereals without application and with application of PGB is carried out on such items:

  • Productivity and area of cereals during 5 years (2008-2012) according to the government statistics;
  • Output of straw, nutritious remains and rootsfrom grown up cereals according to the regress equations. The regress equations are resulted for two levels of productivity - low and high as dependence of quantity of the vegetative rests on yield increase is not always rectilinear;
  • Calculation of dry substance output from biomass;
  • Calculation of carbon content in sideline products, crop remains and roots with the recalculation to СО2.

Obtained results. Biomass of corn, winter wheat and rice most of all accumulates СО2 (table 1).
