Health improvement of cattle suffering from leucosis

General information about leukosis

  • Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) – is an infectious and chronic disease of tumourous kind.
  • Leukoses are one of the most common pathologies among humans and animals. In the research laboratories in test tubes the virus grows and develops in human cells.
  • The highest spread of leukosis is in countries with a developed breeding and dairy farming.

The percentage ratio of disadvantaged countries among the different continents of the world concerning bovine leukosis

The current problem:

In Latin America more than 25% of cows are infected with leukosis

30-70% of the big horned cattle are infected with leukemia in Peru within all geographic areas of the country. The infection rate among the dairy cows is 30-100%.

Bovine leukosis virus recorded in almost all countries of the world:

  • in Europe .................... 43,3-45,0%;
  • in America .................. 54,2-59,4 %;
  • in Asia ....................... 11,1-15,7 %;
  • Africa ......................... 2,5 – 5,0 %;
  • Australia and Oceania . 33,3-40,7 % of the countries.

Ukraine is free from bovine leucosis.

Economic losses caused by bovine leucosis consist of a number of factors

  • Emergency slaughter of animals
  • Loss of breeding values
  • Expenditure on milk and disposal of animal carcasses
  • Shortfall in milk and offspring
  • Reducing safety and quality of milk and meat
  • Costs of laboratory and diagnostic tests
  • Costs of disinfection

Description

The BLV-AGID diagnostic detects specific precipitating antibodies to one of the structural proteins of the virus using the known antigen of leucosis virus, and which diffuse in agar gel, and when meeting form an antigen-antibody complex. This allows detection of specific precipitating antibodies in the serum of animals’ blood on the15th -30th day after the infection.

In the basis of the accelerated recovery method (Inventor's Certificate 71138A) lays a method of growing healthy calves from cows infected with leucosis. There is conducted division of animals of the main herd into the healthy and those ill with leukemia and serological tests at intervals of 30-45 days, feeding the calves with the milk from healthy animals is held.

Treatment method of leukosis

Due to absence of effective vaccination prevention against bovine leukosis in present the first way of successful prevention and overcoming a bovine leukosis is the diagnosing and selection of leukemic animals in the herds.

We have developed a unique system of accelerated recovery (Inventor's Certificate № 71138 A), which gives the opportunity to free the farming from bovine leukosis within a year. By this method we have already released most regions of Ukraine from leukosis.

Accelerated recovery system has been used within 2003-2013 years in 1600 households of Rivne, Khmelnytsky, Zhytomyr, Volyn, Zaporizhzhya and Donetsk region of Ukraine.

At the beginning of the introduction of the accelerated recovery system, 90 % of households of Ukraine were infected with bovine leucosis, today there are only two infected farms left.

Innovative aspect and main advantages

The BLV-AGID diagnostic kit from Research Epizootology Station of Rivne is working on the level of other similar systems. Accelerated recovery system enables the farms to get rid of bovine leucosis within a year.

Areas of Application

Diagnosticum is used in the veterinary medicine to detect animals infected with leucosis. Accelerated recovery system is used in farms infected with bovine leucosis.

Stage of Development

The BLV-AGID diagnostic kit from Research Epizootology Station of Rivne comes in liquid and liofelizated form since 2000. In Ukraine the diagnosticum supply is done through: state procurement system and livestock services manufacturers for scientific support of our institution.

Accelerated recovery system has been used within 2003-2013 years in 1600 households of Rivne, Khmelnytsky ,Zhytomyr, Volyn, Zaporizhzhya and Donetsk region of Ukraine.

The basis of our contacts in Latin America will be the recovery system for farms from a bovine leukosis.

The preliminary agreements are concluded and relations established with The National University of San Marcos, Scientific University of the South and National Agrarian University - La Molina (Institute of Biotechnology) in Peru with the purpose of cooperation and co-working.
