Description

New recirculation seed dryer powered by electric energy was developed and manufactured and new technology of grain, seeds and groats drying with air moderately heated by a heater was implemented.

Drying procedure modes are ensured by unique dryer design equipped with grain recirculation, grain metering and mixing systems, air heating up and cooling systems, grain temperature and humidity monitoring systems and others. Blowing through a flowing grain in aerator with air in the direction lateral to flow and under condition of variable drying temperatures allows to remove moisture quickly and uniformly from grain kernels both their outer surface and internal layers.

New Technology Advantage

  • Energy independence owing to electric energy application instead of fossil fuels;
  • Low impact (sparing) and uniform aeration drying of grain and seeds with practically any moisture content in harvesting time irrespective of weather conditions;
  • Power saving at the expense of combined drying with heated and ambient air;
  • Ecologically clean grain and seed not polluted (like in gas-fired dryers) by fuel combustion products and, as a consequence, ecologically clean grain products like bread, pasta, etc;
  • High-quality drying of unripe grain harvested 1-2 weeks ahead of time.

Electrical Dryer Advantage vs. High-Temperature Gas Dryer:

  • High-quality drying of certified seed, the best technology at present;
  • Approx. 1.5 less operational expenses owing to natural gas replacement by electric energy;
  • Preventing grain heat damage inherent to thermal drying at the expense of added drying of grain by 1-2% in the electric dryer;
  • Electric dryers operation cost-efficiency at any region irrespective of fossil fuels availability;
  • Less wet grain loss (natural 3% vs. statistically average 20%) due to high-quality drying and owing to reasonable price of electric dryers which are 2 time less expensive than gas dryers.

Proposed technology of combined low-temperature grain drying and electric recirculation dryer design are both covered by the US Patent and International Application.



Areas of Application

Electric dryer and low-temperature grain drying technology were developed for operation at farmer and seed farms. The dryer can operate as both a part of grain storage and stand-alone grain drying complex also.

Progress of Development

The manufactured pilot dryer (volume approx. 4 tons with corn) was erected on the skirts of Dnepropetrovsk (see photo) and its operation was commenced on September 1, 2013.

The grain drying complex comprises silo-type dryer, holding bin, elevator tower, vertical elevator, advanced heater, air supply system and gravity-feed lines to receive, transfer and discharge grain to commercial grain buyer. Grain cleaner can be installed also.

Tests used commercial corn at moisture content 22.5-25% and certified sunflower and corn seeds with moisture content 12.5% and 20.5% respectively and buckwheat groats with moisture 20.5%. Average ambient air temperature was 2-100С  @ RH 90-100%. During drying of commercial corn and buckwheat groats temperature of grain did not exceed 550С, and 380С for sunflower and corn certified seeds. Commercial corn and buckwheat groats were dried to 12,5% within 3-3.5 hours, whereas sunflower and corn seeds were dried to 7% and 13.5% respectively within 2.5-3 hours .

In-field test confirmed right approach to dryer design and developed technology which ensured obtaining of high-quality end products and higher seeds germination. Grain and seeds drying cost does not exceed $1.6 and $2.2 respectively at moisture removal 1 t%.

In March 2014 documentation on 10 t serial electric dryers for drying certified seeds at efficiency 50 t/day and 18t serial electric dryers for commercial grain drying at efficiency 100 t/day will be issued. Preproduction and manufacture of the maiden serial dryer including set of equipment is scheduled to complete in July 2014.

Technology and electric dryer design were developed by Elevator LLC personnel in cooperation with and through the kind offices of Prof. R. Noyes, Oklahoma State University, USA within frameworks of the STCU program. New advanced heater for the dryer was designed and manufactured by RPA “Advanced Heating Technologies”, Kiev.
