Epizootological Research of Chlamydial Infection Spreading Among Feral and Domestic Birds in Ukraine.

Description

Chlamydiosis, also known as psittacosis or ornitosis, is a disease that affects more than 400 species of birds and may cause a high mortality. It is also transmissible from birds to human. The disease usually binds with an intracellular organism of the family Chlamydiaceae Chlamydia psittaci (formerly known as Chlamydophila psittaci). However, studies in recent years show that other chlamydial species prevalent among birds.


At present, there is no sufficient data about the chlamydial infections prevalent among the feral and domestic birds in Ukraine. Moreover, there is very little or no information about the variety of chlamydiae species affecting birds in our country, even though zoonoses have gained increasing world wide attention in recent years.

Innovative Aspects and Main Advantages

The prevalence of chlamydial infection, biodiversity and pathogenicity of pathogens in feral and domestic birds in Ukraine by means of molecular genetic methods will be provided. Genetic differences may be so extensive that there is even the possibility of discovering new species, especially when studying Chlamydia psittaci. According to this research the establish dependency manifestation of clinical signs of chlamydiosis in birds of the species and genetic characteristics of pathogen will be studied and determine the frequency of latent carriers of chlamydiosis in birds in Ukraine.The obtained data will help deeper understand of the potential danger to carry birds for human and allow to create the epizootological map of spreading of chlamydial agents among birds in Ukraine.

  • Medicine and veterinary medicine – pathogens may cause the disease in human and animals.
  • Biotechnology – it possible to use the strains for DNA and antigen obtaining or vaccine development.



Stage of Development

Cloacal, cojunctival, and nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from wild pigeons, parrots, eagles, ducks, turkeys etc. The total number of samples was 210. All of this specimens were studied in the Insitute of Molecular Pathogenesis, Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (German).Chlamydia avium was detected in pigeons on the territory of Ukraine, and the strain of Chlamydia gallinacea from turkey was isolated.
