High-performance coherent mm-band radar for surface traffic monitoring and control at the airports

Description

The solid-state MM-band radar is developed and implemented to observe over air-crafts, technological vehicles and other objects at an airfield of the airports. Its characteristics are close to those demanded to the radar sensors for surface traffic monitoring and control systems at the modern airport terminals (Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System “ASMGCS” by the ICAO classification), which are created at present. Its principal difference from analogical devices offered by other developers is an application of coherent processing for radar signals.

That has allowed to implement two new features:

  • an automatic selection of moving targets and also their classification by speed;
  • essentially, more than 10 times, decreasing power of sounding pulses radiated in the Ka-band due to completely solid-state generator.

The device is economic in power consumption, has mass less than 200 kg and does not require expensive constructions for its installation.

Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages

Achievement of new quality:

  • the moving objects can be selected automatically against the background of the plural fixed objects, being in a zone of control;
  • the ecological indexes becomes higher because of essential lowering of microwave field radiation power into environmental space;
  • the magnetron generator was replaced by the longlife solid-state amplifier of the transmitter;
  • that is possible to use the device both as a sensor at the ASMGCS system network and as an independent scanning radar for airfield observation at small airports.

Areas of Application

As a sensor in surface traffic monitoring and control systems created at the modern airports, or as an independent radar for servicing in small airports. Without fundamental improvements it can be used for navigation control in straits, rivers and in sea ports, and also for protection of industrial territories, warehousing objects, etc.

Stage of Development

One fundamental and two pioneering works were made, and also the innovative project "RLSAERO" was fulfilled in 2007. The experimental sample of solid-state radar of 8-millimeter (Ка) band was developed and tested in real conditions of operation, including airdrome of the Kharkov aviation plant. Now the working sample of the radar, which is ownership of the IRE NAS of Ukraine, is placed on the territory of the Institute for demonstration purposes to the customers. Additional modifications and improvements could be implemented into this radar according to specific interests of the customers.
