Radar for deep subsurface probing


Radar for deep subsurface probing (RDSP) operates on the basis of combined stepped frequency continuous wave and impulse changing of frequency of a probing signal in the frequency range 0.4-5 MHz. The heterodyning radar architecture is used for synchronous detecting of radar returns by carrying over the frequency of received signal to the fixed intermediate frequency. The "CW" impulses with fixed frequencies are transmitted separately. Each subsequent impulse has carrier frequency which differs from previous one on fixed value. Such construction of a georadar allows providing auto correlative function of the probing signal with low side lobes level. Usage of coherent operating mode during the period between adjacent impulses allows avoid necessity of time delay lines and permits to utilize rather low frequency ADC with large dynamic range.

Radar for deep subsurface probing is intended for solving geological problems with investigation of minerals and sounding on depths down to 1 km. As a georadar antenna the magnetic loopback antenna of new type is applied with one conductor that has the flat form and is allocated near land surface, and second conductor which is placed in the shell from an absorbing material. The antenna radiates under surface up to 12 dB more effectively than the common type loop antenna of the same size. On each step of carrier frequency the antenna is automatically tuning up to the resonance conditions which essentially raises it efficiency.

Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages

Radar for deep subsurface probing is intended especially for application in the geology. The main advantage of the system consists in possibility to extract additional information as for physical properties of rocks at sounding on depths down to 1 km. This feature is based on measurement of the phase structure of reflected signals with its subsequent usage for restoring of electrical characteristics of layers and rocks of ground. For this purposes new mathematical algorithms are used, in which dependence of phase structure of signals on electrical characteristics of the environment is utilized.

For increasing of spatial resolution at sounding of large areas, synthesis of antenna aperture will be utilized taking into account influence of heterogeneity of subsurface structures of ground onto phase speed of radio-waves propagation in ground layers.

Areas of Application

  • Diagnostic of structure of layers and rocks on depths down to 1 km.
  • Detection and mapping of heterogeneities of ground layers connected with possible deposits of oil and gas sources (hydrochloric domes, etc.) on depths down to 1 km.
