Portable microwave radar system for precise monitoring of man-made and natural objects


Radar system for monitoring man-made and natural objects undergoing invisible temporal structural changes with the aim of detection and prediction of possible catastrophes.

The system designed is a ground based noise waveform synthetic aperture radar (SAR) operating in Ka-band (central frequency ~36.5 GHz, wavelength ~8 mm) and capable of generating coherent SAR images, radio-holograms of the illuminated object surface.

Differential interferometry technique being applied to the two radio-holograms of the same object taken from the same position, but at different time instances, enables detecting of tiny and invisible by naked eye structural changes in the object surface. Usually such changes may occur before catastrophic crashes in buildings, bridges, dams, etc. or before snow avalanche, land-slide, volcano's eruptions, etc. That is why the radar system suggested is capable of detecting of pre-catastrophic states of big objects.

Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages

The suggested portable microwave radar system is the first operational system of that type with rather short data acquisition time. Design of this system is based upon innovative developments in IRE NASU: synthetic aperture antennas and noise radar technology. The synthetic aperture antennas enabled making it as a portable, easy-to-install and fast operating device suitable for taking coherent microwave images of extended objects. Application of Ka-band noise/chaotic waveform allows reaching rather high spatial resolution and provides its robust day and night all-weather operating in non-friendly environment (fog, dust, etc.). It also has high performance in electromagnetic compatibility and interference immunity. The device developed is an innovative instrumentation for solving essentially novel problems in precise remote monitoring of various objects.

Areas of Application

The portable microwave radar system is suitable for remote sensing applications, such as:

  • Building engineering: detection of pre-catastrophic structural changes in big buildings, bridges, dams, TV towers, hangars for jet liners and space ships, tunnels, etc.
  • Environment monitoring: detection of pre-catastrophic state in snow avalanche, land-slide, volcano, etc.

Stage of Development

The portable microwave radar system has been field tested, and is currently available for demonstration. We may produce 1-2 systems per year upgraded according to custom orders.
