General Information

The Institute was founded in 1971. Currently there are 91 employees including 3 Members of the Georgian Academy of Sciences, 1 Corresponding Member of the Georgian Academy of Sciences, 16 Doctors of Science, and 38 PhDs. There are six Departments at the Institute by the following directions:

  • Laboratory of Biotechnology
  • Laboratory of Nucleic Acids
  • Laboratory of Nitrogen Fixation and Assimilation Enzymes
  • Laboratory of Biological Oxidation
  • Laboratory of Secondary Compounds
  • Laboratory of Plant Substrates Bioconversion

Facilities: Laboratories, Green House, Pilot Plant.

Institute’s Focus

Research; Technology development; Production of different biologically active preparations.

  • Investigation of rich endemic vegetation of the Caucasus on the content of physiologically active compounds. Isolation and characterization of these compounds;
  • Creation of collection of microorganisms of different taxonomic groups from the diverse soil-climatic zones of the Caucasus with special attention to extremophiles, investigation their pathogenicity and detoxificational potential;
  • Selection of industrially valuable microbial strains (mutant, fusant and transformant) of different taxonomic groups, actively producing different enzymes and low-molecular-weight metabolites (citric acid, amino acids, etc.) and enzymes (amylases, cellulases, xylanases, proteases, laccase, Mn-dependent peroxidase, etc);
  • Biological control of plant bacteriosis;
  • Creation of plant preparation for protection of organisms from the action of radiation;
  • Investigation of plants and microorganisms ability to absorb and enzymatically degrade organic pollutants of different structure. Revelation of oxidative enzymes (monooxygenases, peroxidases, polyphenoloxidases) in different kind of plants.

  • Biotechnology of plant origin natural colorants (brown, yellow, red) production;
  • Highly active natural antioxidant preparations from the Caucasus endemic vegetation;
  • Elaboration of quantitatively new ecobiotechnologies for the remediation and long term protection of environment from organic toxicants;
  • Strains of microorganisms, including extremophiles, of different taxonomic groups actively synthesizing enzymes (hydrolases, oxidases), low molecular weight compounds and secondary metabolites;
  • Biological control of tomato bacterial spot based on bacteriophage.
