General Information

Agladze Institute of Inorganic Chemistry & Electrochemistry (IICE) was founded in 1956 within the Georgian Academy of Sciences. Its founder and first Director Acad. R. I. Agladze was very prominent scientist. During its existence, the vast contributions have been brought in the electrochemistry of manganese, nitrogen, chromium, copper, the important technologies were used in industry (electrolytic manganese, potassium permanganate). The important investigations were carried out in the fields of thermochemistry, theory of the charge transfer in condensed systems, electrochemistry of melts, radiation chemistry etc. IICE has 12 scientific laboratories. It currently employs just over 100 doctorate-level (PhD and Dr.Sc.) researchers. Facilities include experimental workshops.

Institute’s Focus

Institute’s areas of core competencies include the following:

  • Technologies for treatment of Georgian mineral raw materials and obtaining of new materials;
  • New membrane and nanotechnologies;
  • Advanced date research methods for ecology safety and medicine.

  • Processes of dissociation of biologically active organic acids;

  • Radiation chemistry;

  • Non-aqueous electrochemistry;
  • Optical spectroscopy;
  • Coordination compounds, etc.

Recent investigations explore research opportunities in:

  • Hydrogen;
  • Solar power generation;
  • Corrosion-resistant coatings, using uranium filters for water purification.

  • Simultaneous generation of power and hydrogen peroxide in the fuel cell system;
  • Electrochemical generators for production of hydrogen peroxide;
  • Ion-selective membrane reactors for simultaneous production of electrolytic manganese and manganese dioxide;
  • 5V cathode materials for Li-ion rechargeable batteries;
  • Electrochemical method of production of iron powder for wheat flour fortification;
  • Ecologically safe and wasteless technology for electrolytic manganese dioxide production for modern chemical power sources;

Scientific Cooperation and Technology Transfer

IICE has collaborative relations with several institutions in Ukraine (Institute of Inorganic Chemistry), Italy (University Ferrara, Milan), USA (New York University), Germany (University of Munich, Lester University), Denmark (Technical University of Denmark), Russia (Frumkin Institute of Electrochemistry, Nesmeyanov Institute of Chemical Physics; Lomonosov Moscow State University, St.Petersburg State University), Estonia (Tartu University), Azerbaijan (Institute of Chemical Problems, Baku). Several projects have been funded by the ISTC, STCU, and Georgian NSF. Cooperation with industry is limited to just a few instances, e.g. design bureau Yuzhnoye, Ukraine; National Energy Corp., Israel.
