General Information

Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) is an educational-scientific organization, which is carrying out educational programs at bachelors’, masters’ as well as doctoral level. The main function of TSU is providing higher education, conducting scientific researches, and performing creative work consisting of basic educational and additional structural units and instates the corresponding academic degrees.

The first University in Georgia as well as in whole Caucasus region – TSU is the leader of sciences in Georgia. TSU scientists are carrying out researches in up-to date problems, which are publishing in high-rating scientific journals. The close cooperation and collaboration are established with many scientific groups and top-ranking Universities of all over the world. Alumni of Tbilisi State University are invited at leading universities and scientific centers in order to conduct the joint investigations as well as to deliver lectures.

Dynamic reformation includes changes in the organizational structure of the University, such as creation of a consulting service for researchers, establishment of a Technopark, development of a patenting system, establishment of inter-disciplinary scientific centers and so on - to better address the issues of commercialization, capacity building, and sustainability. A reorganized Scientific Department of TSU is set to coordinate scientific research, assist in attracting international investment and grant funding, engage in commercialization of science, and oversee the creation of Technoparks, Centers, and Business Incubators.

Institute’s Focus

There are three main directions outlined in the Plan of Strategic Development of TSU:

  • Establishment of three level study programs in accordance with international standards and Bologna process;
  • Creation of national, regional and International R&D projects;
  • Development of educational and social infrastructure, material base and flexible financial system.

Valuable Technology Offerings

  • Influence of phago-flavonoids on myocardial metabolic processes in case of coronary heart disease;
  • New types of PCS antennas and program package for antenna design;
  • Buried objects detection and discrimination: combining fast, accurate and physically complete forward and inverse models for UXO identification problems;
  • Active fillers for composite materials;
  • New backfill systems for extraction of the oil;
  • Development of polymeric coating materials for long-term shelf-life of citrus;
  • Manufacture of ‘siliconorganic compounds’;
  • Burnt resistant materials and coatings;
  • Hydrophobization of buildings and historical monuments;
  • Control of wide band gap semiconductor properties by radical beam quasiepitaxy method.

Scientific Cooperation and Technology Transfer

Currently, the University has a number of projects funded by the ISTC, STCU, CRDF, NATO Science for Peace, Georgian NSF, etc. TSU is interested in learning the international experiences (Finland, Baltic republics) in creating an effective model of science and research administration and is participating in a TACIS project, together with the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, aimed at development of methodology for the transition of Georgian Universities to new organizational structures reflecting commercialization of science and technology transfer as major priorities.
