Polyvalent Bacteriophage Preparation for Control of Tomato Bacterial Spot

Description

In recent years a great interest gave rise to safe food production. Up to now for phytopathogenic bacteria infection controlling chemical means are used. Bacterial populations often show wide spread resistance to them, but mixing and application high concentrations of chemicals can damage plant tissue, resulting in bacteria quick reproduction and disease outbreak. Major concern is penetration of toxic chemicals in edible parts of vegetables.

One of the encouraging ways is an application of natural biocontrolling agents, bacteriophages, which is safe and environmentaly friendly. At the Durmishidze Institute of Biochemistry and Biotechnology (DIBB) it has been developed the polyvalent lytic bacteriophage preparation against different strains of Xanthomonas vesicatoria, which damage seeds and all aboveground parts of the tomato and cause the Bacterial Spot disease.

The created polyvalent bacteriophage preparation exhibits wide activity range and high effectiveness. Treatment of tomato seeds with the preparation guaranteed the 85% raise of healthy plants as compared to 25% weak seedlings of bacterial control (Fig. 1). The application of preparation on leaves and fruits successfully hindered the disease onset when it was sprayed simultaneously or even after a week of bacterial infection.

Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages

Innovative approach is creation and application of the polyvalent bacteriophage preparation against the phytopathogenic bacteria Xanthomonas vesicatoria. The possibility of use of lytic phages for prevention and treatment purposes is considered by phage ability to affect sensitive bacteria as long as bacteria are present, penetrate deeper and deeper and when bacteria not more exist, phages are gradually eliminated from the individual and the environment.

Bacteriophages isolated at the DIBB belong to the Tailed phages, family Myoviridae, differently from known phages on the base of which is prepared Agriphage by Omnilytics Inc. (US).

Advantages of the DIBB polyvalent lytic bacteriophage preparation over chemical means that are used for Bacterial spot treatment:

  • Safety for humans, wildlife and the environment;
  • A wide activity range and high effectiveness;
  • Simplicity of the trade style of the polyvalent bacteriophage preparation (a concentrated preparation could be poured into ampoules).

The preparation had shown the high beneficial results both in vitro and in vivo conditions.

Stage of Development

  • Showed positive results in conditions: in vitro and in vivo.
  • There is an application for Georgian patent “The treatment – preventive remedy against Tomato Bacterial spot”.
