Phytoremediation of Soils by Using of Biosurfactants and Biodiesel Plants

Description

Phytoremediation ecotechnologies based on application of ecological potential of plants and microorganisms are actively used for remediation of chemically contaminated soils and water reservoirs. However, the efficiency of phytoremediation is sufficiently decreased due to the low mobility of toxicant molecules. The similar cases appear while dealing with long-term contamination of soil with crude oil, when the light hydrocarbons of oil have volatized and the components with long chains form resin mass, which is very hard to remove. Besides the long-chain hydrocarbons, heavy metals, usually being in form of insoluble compounds, are also persistent contaminants. In this case, it is necessary to use agents able of chelating heavy metals, which then are easily extracted by plants.

For solution of this problem we have developed jointly with our Ukrainian colleagues the concept of the biotechnology, which imply using of bio-surfactants (surface-active substances of microbial origin) in phytoremediation.

Bio-surfactants are able to emulsify resin mass, solubilization of heavy metals and improve their absorption by plants. These properties can considerably increase the efficiency of application of phytoremediation technologies for cleaning the soil, contaminated with heavy metals and long-chain oil products. In addition to use of bio-surfactants we can grow oil-accumulating technical plants that can be used for bio-fuel production.

Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages

Innovations of developed phytoremediation approaches are:

  • Application of bio-surfactants stimulating growth and uptake of contaminants by plants;
  • Application of technical plants used in biodiesel production.

Advantages of biogenic surfactants compared with their synthetic analogues are:

  • High surface tension (28-33 mn/m);
  • Affectivity at extreme temperatures and pH;
  • Metal-chelating properties;
  • Biodegradability;
  • Positive influence on the growing of plants.

Advantages of new phytoremediation method are:

  • Increased efficiency of phytoremediation;
  • Ecologically safe;
  • Significantly lower cost of remediation (5-10 times cheaper as compared to existing non-biological technologies);
  • Grow bio-fuel plants on cleaned soil.

Areas of Application

  • Environmental technologies – cleaning of soils polluted with oil hydrocarbons or heavy metals;
  • Bio-fuel production.

Stage of Development

Conceptual stage:

  • The researches are in progress;
  • The model field experiments conducted by Ukrainian team have given promising preliminary results (Fig. 1).
