Synthesis of Electrolytic Manganese Dioxide on Anodes from Carbon Fiber Material and Its Use in Galvanic Cells

Galvanic cells of manganese dioxide-zinc system contribute significantly to the saturation of the market of chemical current sources owing to a large number of the factors of technical and economic character. Production of high-quality and low-cost electrolytic manganese dioxide – cathodic material of mentioned chemical current sources, is one of the ways for their improvement. Electrode materials, used in the production of electrolytic manganese dioxide, are characterized by one or another disadvantages: passivation at the disruption of the conditions of electrolysis, low mechanical stability, complexing of the fabrication and high cost, contamination of the product by electrode materials. Electrosynthesis of electrolytic manganese dioxide is characterized by low efficiency, too. For the purpose of removing or decrease of the consequences of mentioned disadvantages, carbon fiber materials were tasted as anodes and cathodes. They are prepared by heat treatment of organic fibers and petroleum products and are fabricated in the form of filament, cloth, braid or feet. Such diversity of the assortment is responsible for their wide constructive feasibilities. They consist of graphite to the extent of 85-99% which determines their good electric conductivity, high specific surface and stability in rigid chemical and thermal conditions. Optimal parameters of the electrolysis for production of electrolytic manganese dioxide on carbon fiber material are shown below:

Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages

Use of carbon fiber materials, as electrodes, improves some technical indications (specific material consumption, volume current density, specific power consumption) of the process of electrosynthesis of manganese dioxide. An absence of the impurities (metallic electrode materials) in electrolytic manganese dioxide, on the age hand and the presence of carbon fiber material in it (because of joint milling of electrode precipitate and electrode material), on the other hand, increases its quality as cathodic material of galvanic cells of manganese dioxide-zinc system.

Areas of Application

Main consumer of electrolytic manganese dioxide is a manufacture of chemical current sources. In chemical industry electrolytic manganese dioxide is also used as catalyst and oxidant and in the productions of paints and glasses.

Stage of Development

Large – scale laboratory electrolysis and testing of prepared electrolytic manganese dioxide as cathode material for chemical current sources have shown an efficiency of the use of carbon fiber materials in the synthesis of electrolytic manganese dioxide as electrode material. By data of proposed elaboration Georgian patents were obtained.
