Utilization of Spent Mn-Zn System Batteries

Description

World consumer’s market of primary current sources is saturated with Mn-Zn system batteries, which after the exhaustion of utilization or operation time becomes useless and is collected in dust holes as domestic waste. The batteries of the mentioned systems are made of such expensive materials as high quality manganese dioxide, metal zinc, graphite, stainless steel, etc. Each component of the batteries, in its part, is the product of quite complicated, volume- and power-intensive technological processes. In the process of exploitation, these materials experience various transformations but, in this or that form, are still contained in the composition of batteries. It is natural that eventually, alongside with environment contamination, tones of expensive material are lost. For utilization of the used, spent, unsorted batteries, the metallurgical, chemical and electrochemical methods of processing are used. The most of the proposed technologies consists of elements breakage, high temperature processing, electrolyte leaching, repeated filtration, reagent separation and purification of manganese and zinc containing solutions and special-purpose products electrowinning. The scheme utilization of spend batteries proposed by us consists of the following main operations: breakage of the elements, hydro-vibrated treatment of broken up mass, electrolysis by using of alkali electrolyte. The technological scheme provides full utilization of saline as well as alkaline batteries. This method enables extracting of 200-220kg zinc in powder form, up to 130 kg steel in the form of scrap and 300-350 kg of manganese concentrate, from each ton of the broken up mass of elements.

Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages

Method of spent Mn-Zn system batteries utilization has been drawn up which is distinguished:

  • Compactness of technological process;
  • Realization of technological process at a room temperature (instead 400-800oC);
  • Simplicity and cheapness of hardware registration technological scheme;
  • Improvement ecological conditions.

Areas of Application

The designed method can be utilized for processing of different remains containing zinc. The products obtained from the recycling of the utilized batteries can be used:

  • Zinc – for metallurgical aims, in powder metallurgy, as reagent in chemical production and even in production of batteries as one of the current producing material;
  • Manganese concentrate (48-55% Mn) – for metallurgical aims, further treatment of which will enable the obtaining of metallic manganese o high purity, manganese salts and oxides;
  • Steel scrap – in metallurgy.
