Hydrogen Sensor Based on the Acoustic Quartz-Resonator


Devices devoted for registration of small hydrogen concentrations in the environment become very important today. As a basis of a corresponding widely applicable commercial device we propose the hydrogen sensor elaborated within the frames of the joint Georgian-Ukrainian STCU project N 3867. The sensor is based on the hydrogen absorbing metallized acoustic high quality quartz resonator, developed and successfully used in experiments in the E.Andronikashvili Institute of Physics. It provides a high precision control of the vibrating read natural frequency changes caused by the hydrogen absorption in the metallic nano-particles powder film (in correspondence with the known Sauerbrey equation). A general scheme of the device is shown in Fig.1.

Our numerical estimations have shown that at the anticipated mass change of the read (equal to 0.5 μg) the change of the natural frequency reaches 100 Hz, which could be easily registered by our sensor, as its resonance curve width is of the order of 1 Hz at natural frequency equaling approximately 1 MHz. Preliminary measurements of hydrogen absorption abilities of the high quality metallized resonator were performed on the vibrators covered by on Ni and Pt layers. An example of results is shown in Fig. 2.

Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages

The sensor of this type would satisfy all actual requirements in the sense of the operation speed and sensitivity. (It responds on the hydrogen concentration in the air of the order of 0.1 %, while the dangerous hydrogen concentration equals approximately 4%).

It is exists a number of sensors for ecological purposes (including the electrochemical, thermo-catalytic, and some other types of sensors). But they are, on the one hand, too expensive, while those are using the semiconductors are not characterized by a suitable selectivity. The comparative analyses of the contemporary sensors have shown the advantage in sensitivity of the quartz resonator type sensors described by us. They are absent on the national market and we believe that they are absent at the international markets as well, due to the original character of the main component - high quality quartz fork covered by hydrogen absorbing metal layer imposed by the chemical-metallization technology.

Areas of Application

Pure hydrogen gas is widely used in the energy plants. It will become soon one of the most important components of the clean energy technologies. Moreover, hydrogen is a widely applicable industrial gas and raw material in numerous industries, such as metallurgical, chemical, pharmaceutical, fertilizer and food industries. For these reasons, the proposed highly sensitive hydrogen sensor will become a very important device in the forthcoming future.

Stage of Development

Preliminary tests of Ni and Pt nano-powder-covered resonators in respect to estimate their hydrogen absorption abilities were carried out. A method of fabrication of the high quality metallized resonators with optimal parameters is elaborated. The next step is design and manufacturing of pilot commercial device.
