Ultra-Low-Temperature Measuring Complex

Description

At present the need for low and ultra low temperatures application has strongly increased in such areas of a science and technologies like high-speed electronics, superconducting systems, ground and orbital-based infra-red detectors, a radar-location. Low temperatures also are intensively used in fundamental researches of the condensed spheres, physical chemistry, astrophysics and even in biology.

Traditional low temperatures technologies require creation of a bulky and expensive infrastructure. In addition, plenty of experts are necessary for cooling plant operation. We offer the new technology, allowing to lower the temperature of the commercial closed cycle refrigerator (Fig. 1) more than on the order of magnitude.

On the basis of the specified device it is possible to build a multipurpose measuring complex with extensive capabilities. The complex involves a precision acoustic spectrometer with extremely low level background dissipation on the basis of a three-reed tuning fork, a calorimeter, a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, a measuring instrument of a magnetic susceptibility and the magnetic moment, etc. The measuring complex on the basis of analog-digital and digital-to-analog converters is integrated into a computer with the corresponding software.

Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages

The step of cooling developed by us with Не3 is attached to «a cold finger» of a refrigerator which works as the first step of cooling process (Fig. 2). The device does not require any engineering personnel, gas handling system, vacuum valves and mechanical or high-vacuum pumps and allows receiving temperatures below than 0.3K.

Areas of Application

Such a device is enable to carry out the complex multiplediscipline researches in wide temperature span with the minimal expenses. Future prospects include the expansion of the temperature range up to 15-20 mK by using the additional step of “single-shot” dilution refrigerator. The device is also applicable in the educational practice.

Stage of Development

The device has been developed in Andronikashvili Institute of Physics and later its prototype was built and tested in Jerusalem University’s laboratory of Prof. W.Glaberson.
