Automated System for Protecting People from Explosions in Underground Structures

Description

Rapid development of underground space, characteristic of growing urbanisation increases the need for maintaining a high level of safety in underground structures.

Hazards:

  • terrorist and casual explosions in underground stations, pedestrian subways, underground highway and railway sections, and other types of underground structures;
  • methane explosion in coal mines.

The proposed protective system consists of:

  • a wireless system for the detection of unauthorized explosions and activation of an absorber;
  • hydraulic energy absorber.

A wireless system of activation consists of transmitter and receiver modules.

A transmitter module contains a sensor, a microprocessor equipped with blast detection software and a transceiver, which serves to transmit an encoded signal. A receiver module has a transceiver, which serves to receive a signal, a microprocessor and a fail safe decoder, which produces a starting signal for the operation of an absorber.

The identification process involves an initiation signal which is transmitted to the activation block of a hydraulic energy absorber. The hydraulic energy absorber will consist of a main pipeline and separate containers adapted to the specific geometry of the protected structures and installed at the appropriate intervals. The containers will be equipped with a pyrotechnic activation block and nozzles, and, at the command of the initiation signal, will be able to produce tailored dispersing water barriers along the whole perimeter of the tunnel.

Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages

The improved reliability and effectiveness of the proposed protective system can be achieved by introducing the following innovations:

  1. Wireless system for the detection of unauthorized explosions and activation of protective device without external power supply;
  2. Absorber of a new design ensuring the discharge of dispersed water the size of the droplets being 200 microns;
  3. Pyrotechnic facility of a new design for quick absorber activation (activation time after detonation - maximum 15 ms).

Potential customers:

  • Transport companies, subway systems;
  • Coal mine companies;
  • Chemical Plants and other sites which are under risk of gas/dust explosion.

Stage of Development

Trial samples of system have been bench tested. The protective system was selected together with other fifteen designs from a large number of proposed security facilities for the Global Security Challenge Competitions 2008.
