New Light Composite Armor Protecting From High-Energy Kinetic Striker


It is obtained new, high exploitation properties light composite metal-ceramic armor and it is developed the technological scheme for obtaining it.

To attain the goal, a methodology of composite design with high energy of destruction and a modern technology of selfpropagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) has been developed. Multi-component metal-ceramic composition was synthesized: TiB-TiB2-Al2O3-Ti + R(n-TiN; TiC; WC, etc.

where R – is nano-structural addition obtained in Ferdinand Tavadze Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science by zol-gel technology.

The scheme developed by SHS-compacting allows obtaining new armor composite material (Fig.1) with high-standard physical-mechanical properties, by varying volume part, rate of technological burning and temperature of nano-dimension insertions, as well as of refractory components.

Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages

The attained scientific-technological level allows opportunities for further increase of property and quality indexes of the obtained composite.

To obtain composites with higher anti-ballistic properties, as compared to its present analogues, there was used two stage strategy:

  • Application last advantages of modern physics materials science and nano-technologies for construction of structure of ceramic composite materials;
  • Maximal realization of competitive technological advantages of SHS-compacting technology as modern high technology.

Main advantages of the developed technological scheme are as follows:

  • Simplicity and technological purity of technology equipment;
  • Practically zero expenditure of external energy;
  • Opportunity for repeated processing (abrasives) of technological waste.

Areas of Application

Pilot examples of innovation product were obtained, in particular:

  1. Light armors for defense of helicopter pilots and vitally important centers from 12,7mm calibration armor-piercing bullets (NATO standard STANAG 4569 IV level of defense). Weight of single area/space of defense is 65- 70kg/m2, which is exceeding the best index of hitherto existing analogous armor materials.
  2. Light armor for individual defense equipment (STANAG 4569 defense II and III grade); АКМ, armor-piercing bullet BZ-32, SVD armor-piercing bullet Б-32. Weight of single area/space of defense are 34kg/m2 and 42kg/m2 equal or exceeding corresponding characteristics of hitherto existing best foreign analogues (Fig. 2).
  3. Construction fragments for bank cars, VIP armor motorcars for defense/protection of crew and valuables from any type of fire-arms.
  4. Targets for obtaining high strength coverings, etc. through magnetrone sputtering.

Fig. 2 represents histograms of characteristics of a new material and of already known armor materials:
a) values of destruction energy (K1C);
b) values of cost of standard plate 7,5dm2;
c) values of standard plate-7,5dm2 resistance in case of intrusion of plentiful injuring elements (number of bullet shots on ordinate).

Stage of Development

Tested, available for demonstration – field experiments have been implemented.
