Production of Manganese Sulfate by Bacterial Leaching of Manganese-Containing Industrial Waste


The technology is attributed to biotechnology of metals, in particular, to bacterial leaching from manganese-containing industrial wastes. Leaching is realizable from industrial wastes with any content of manganese: ore-enriching industrial slurry, tails, solutions, silico-manganese and ferromanganese industrial slag, dust, unutilized ore, etc. End product of bacterial leaching is water solution of manganese sulfate. Bacterial leaching is realized with the help of autotrophic bacteria via using pyrite or pyrite-containing industrial wastes as energetic material. Generally, the wastes used as row material for leaching (dust, solution, slam, and tails) do not need any preliminary preparation: they are directly mixed with pyrite or pyrite-containing industrial waste. Mass ratio of the two components depends on manganese content in the waste. To the mixture it is added the so-called cultural solution (bacterial solution) depending on the mass content. Concentration of the manganese transfer into the solution is controlled in every 24 hours.

Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages

Advantage of the technology consists in using practically unusable manganese-containing industrial wastes as main raw material. Inclusion of this material in industrial processes will significantly contribute to the problems of environment protection. Besides, the technology does not require expensive high temperature equipment, power intensity is much less, and the produced solutions are characterized with high purity. Duration of bacterial leaching process at this stage makes 10 days and nights, however after some special measures this period is reduced twice. Manganese output is 98%.

In the obtained water solution manganese is recognized as manganese sulfate. Obligatory condition for producing manganese sulfate by conventional method requires using of sulfur acid, that making the technological process more complex, the process proceeds at 80-90oC. Probability that bacterial leaching can be carried out without using sulfur acid is almost 95%. The necessary sulfur acid is separated due to the action of bacteria itself and besides, the process does not require an expensive manganese ore. It must be noted that before leaching of peroxide ore with sulfur acid it is necessary to recover manganese dioxide to the condition of manganese oxide, the process being connected with a procedure of special preparing the ore and its heating up to 800- 850oC
