Georgian Language Support for TeX Typesetting System

TeX is the powerful typesetting system developed by Donald Knuth at Stanford University for American Mathematical Society. Providing automatic indexing, hyphenation, automatic labeling, sectioning and other features, TeX is ideal for document typesetting and linguistic analysis.

It is not possible to typeset high quality documents in TeX/LaTeX in Georgian. This also means that scientific societies and publishers cannot use TeX/LaTeX system to typeset Georgian documents.

The goal of the project is integration of Georgian language in TeX and LaTeX system and popularization of this system in Georgia. After successful completion of the project, we will have: a) free document typesetting system, b) we will be able to use full power of TeX, including multilingual capabilities, for Georgian Alphabet based languages (Georgian, Svan, Laz, Megruli) for typesetting documents on those languages.

Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages

Technical, Natural Sciences, Linguistic communities and publishers in Georgia and around the world will be able to use TeX/LaTeX system for typesetting in Georgian on their computers. Since TeX distributions are available at the internet for many platforms (Windows, Unix, AppleOSX) for free, use of free high quality typesetting system will reduce cost of final product for Georgian publishers.

Created Georgian word database and hyphenation patterns can be used in another software: Georgian spellchecker for OpenOffice can be developed; Georgian preprint database which will be able to accept articles online and generate PostScript and Pdf documents on fly.

Documentation and GeoTUG users website created in frame of this project will help TeX users (students, scientists, publishers) and popularization of TeX and other free (GNU) software in Georgia. Teachers and students in Georgia will be able to use TeX/LaTeX in their work (lecture notes, reports, assignments).

Areas of Application

  • Publisher companies;
