The ozone-dynamic method for used tire disintegration

Description

Processing of used tires is among burning issues across the world. Approximately 650 million tires are yearly manufactured and should be processed only in Europe and the USA. One of the best approaches to the processing of used tires is a manufacture of crumb rubber because crumb rubber is a valuable secondary product.

A tire is an advanced engineering product made of rubber, fiber, textile, and steel cord. Tires are resistant to abrasion and external impacts. Therefore the processing of tires is a complex and energy intensive. Key requirements to any technology of the used tire processing are energy efficiency, level of separation into components (rubber, steel and textile) and, of course, it should be environmentally friendly.

The proposed ozone-dynamic tire disintegration technology represents a quite new approach to a problem of a used tire processing. It is “green” and economically sound method which enables to disintegrate the whole used tires into components (rubber, textile and steel cord). It exploits a well-known phenomenon of a cracking of rubber surface in an ozone environment.

The results of our investigations made it possible to design the pilot unit for ozone-dynamic tire disintegration and to integrate it with an experimental line for processing tires into rubber crumb, steel and textile. The tires of the size from R13 to R19 with both metal and textile cord can be processed. The level of rubber crumb separation can achieve about 90-95 %. The produced crumb rubber has a high developed surface. The produced crumb rubber is totally free from the steel and textile.

Technology Opportunities

  • The processing of used tires and various mechanical-rubber wastes into a crumb rubber;
  • Complete separation of whole tires into the derived products: crumb rubber, scrap steel and textile waste;
  • Tire chips may be treated into a fine rubber powder;
  • The essential reducing energy consumption for crumb rubber processing (2-3 times) through the combined action of high ozone concentrations and dynamic stretching deformation on the tire;
  • The technology can be implemented in both fixed line and mobile module using the new-generation of barrierless ozonizer.

Unique features

  • The method of ozone-dynamic tire disintegration is an environmentally friendly (“green”) and a cost-effectively technology;
  • Processing takes place at room temperatures;
  • There are no harmful exhaust;
  • Low amortization of working parts because there are no cutting or sawing elements;
  • The technology allows processing of steel cord tires.
  • The equipment can be placed at any site, there are no additional requirements.

Fields of application.

The proposed environmentally friendly and a zero-waste method can be used for organization of economically efficient processing of the used tires to the valuable secondary material such as crumb rubber. The produced crumb rubber can be used for production of a reclaimed rubber. Also, crumb rubber can be used for production of rubber-bitumen mastics, coating for roof or as an additive for road compositions.

Development stage.

The technology is at the stage of commercialization. The pilot facility on ozone-dynamic tire processing is available for demonstration. Rubber crumb, textile, fiber and steel cord are available for sale.

We invite partners from companies and research groups who are interested to build up a long-term relationship for improvement of the ozone-dynamic tire disintegration technology and to introduce the technology to the market.
