Formation of nanocomposite systems by means of solid-liquid reactions

Description

It is known that presence of nanoclusters in composite systems improves the most number of physical - chemical properties. Unfortunately the obtaining of such systems is associated with different kind of problems (e.g. technological, technical and others). It is also important to have a fundamental information about changes of structure in nanocomposite synthesis process and to understand their influence on the formation of main working properties for different materials produced on the base of these composites.

We propose to use the mixture of dispersed fine powder and molten metal in order to obtain the nanocomposite systems. The tendency to solid-liquid chemical interaction depends on nature of elements contained in both liquid and solid phases.The formation of multicomponent system with different size of constituents including the nanoscale ones can be governed by changing the temperature and duration of solid-liquid chemical reaction. The pretreatment of powder in inert gas atmosphere is allowed in addition to solid structural units also produce the gas filled pores. Consequently, the density of composite will be reduced without the main properties losses.

Eutectic Al-Si and Al-Cu alloys mixed with dispersed fine Ni powder of 1μm size have been studied. Both the common and the small angles X-ray diffraction studies of system structure dependently on temperature and duration of chemical reaction enable the definition of the main principles of nanocomposite structure formation and the optimization of solid-liquid reaction parameters.

Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages

Existing methods for obtaining of composite systems by means of liquid-solid chemical reactions do not account the dependence of formed phases size on reaction duration and temperature whereas the main attention is attracted to both element and phase content. We consider the possibility to reduce the dispersed powder size down to nanoscale one in order to form the various phases via chemical reaction way and consequently to improve the properties of composite. Accumulating the gas in pores of dispersed powder allows to form a porous metallic alloys more effectively in comparison with other methods. Using of obtained results allowed us to reduce the density of Al-based alloys with improving of their properties.

Areas of Application

The obtained results are interested for material science and technology especially at producing of materials with improved mechanical, corrosive resistance and other properties. They can be used in such branches of industry:

  • aircraft and machine building;
  • chemical engineering;
  • electrical engineering.
