Atlas of operational defects for heat exchange pipes


REFERENCE MANUAL-CATALOG: «Atlas of operational defects for steam generator heat exchange pipes in NNP’s WWER-type».


Types of metallographic analysis and results of the eddy current control of degraded heat exchange pipes are represented. The data for each defect are the following:

  • visualization of defect on a pipe surface;
  • type of defect on metallographic joint in cross-section of a pipe;
  • the short description of defect;
  • data of defect location on a pipe;
  • tables with results of the eddy current control and metallographic analysis.

"Atlas" contains the description of defects in four sections: "corrosion pits", "cracking", "crevices", "corrosion spots". The defectograms were obtained with the two eddy current control systems. The danger level of the defects of various types is estimated according to the results of investigations. "Atlas" includes 237 sheets, 348 figures, 9 tables.

Main Advantages


  • cover all types of possible defects in pipes of steam generators;
  • visualizes and classifies defects: "corrosion pits", "cracking", "crevices", "corrosion spots";
  • 68 defects, revealed on fragments of the tubes in length 1,5…1,9 m were used for analysis;
  • gives a comparison of parameters of the eddy current control (system "TEDDY-8" and «MIZ-30») with the metallography data for various types of defects;
  • Zaporizka Nuclear Power Plant’s (ZNPP) and South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant’s (SUNPP) experts were involved in "Atlas" creation process together with KIPT’s scientists.

Areas of Application


  • "Atlas" is intended for NPP’s metal control services and institutes of higher education, as the visual aid for staff training and educational process.
  • "Atlas" can be used at an estimation of a condition of metal heat exchange pipes of NPP’s steam generators for visualization of a possible type of defects
