Precision differential dielectrometer

Description

Using of differential dielectrometer in millimeter wavelength band (λ = 7.6 mm) allows carrying out express measurements of the signals intensity on the detector, corresponding to the samples with different dielectric parameters: absorption, phase shift, real (ε') and imaginary (ε") parts of permittivity. The main element of measuring device is a cavity containing two consistently allocated cells with variable thickness. The waveguide jointing cell ("shuttle") is closed from both ends by dielectric plates and moves with the help of micro screw. Thus the total path length passable by signal in both cells remains constant (l = 2 mm). If in the cells there are different substances, the amplitude and phase of signal moved through the cell are changing after moving of a sliding waveguide. This is induced by difference in permittivity of the substances.

Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages

The used constructive scheme allows finding difference of two samples with high accuracy for: absorption – 0.005 dB, phase shift – 0.10, so the accuracy of determination of Δε' and Δε" are 0.1 % from absolute value ε', ε". The software allows:

  • averaging and initial treatment of data received during dielectric measurements;
  • calculation of complex permittivity and its derivatives;
  • calculation of parameters of dielectric models which characterize investigated samples.

Areas of Application

Biotechnology. Pharmaceutical industry. Monitoring of quality (pollution) of drinking water, wine, juice, etc. The food-processing industry.

Construction of measuring cell:
1 – a cell for the check sample; 2 – a cell for the investigated
sample; 3, 4 – input and output waveguides; 5 – dielectric
plates; 6 – "shuttle"; 7 – the micro screw; 8 – thermostatic
system; 9 – the indicator; 10 – sylphon bellows.
