General Information

The Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry (IGIC) of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine has 12 scientific departments (including the Department of Chemical and Information Analysis, which coordinates promotion and marketing activities, besides providing various research analytical services) that consists of 175 researchers, of which about 80 have a PhD or a Dr.Sc. degree. In addition to that, the Institute has a Special Design Bureau (“SKTB”) and Experimental Plant.

Institute’s Focus

Scientific research program of the Institute primarily focuses on three main general areas: inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry and electrochemistry, with the following directions being in the forefront:

  • Chemistry of molten salts.
  • Chemistry of complex compounds.
  • Solid state chemistry.
  • Nano- and supramolecular chemistry.
  • Kinetics and mechanism of electrochemical processes.
  • Electrodeposition of metals and alloys.
  • Electrosynthesis of inorganic compounds.
  • High rate electrolysis.
  • Inorganic sorbents.

IGIC has a sizable application-oriented research component, in the areas of

  • metallurgy of non-ferrous metals,
  • biologically active compounds,
  • microfertilizers,
  • nanotubes,
  • ultrapure metals,
  • radioceramics,
  • electrochemical coatings and multiple finishing technologies,
  • radiological decontamination,
  • solar batteries,
  • electrochemical and combined technologies and devices for potable and wastewater purification,
  • inorganic membranes, among others.

Valuable Technology Offerings

  • Novel photoelectrochromic and ionic liquid-crystalline materials.
  • Photodynamically and catalytically active phthalocyanine complexes for the therapy of malignant tumors.
  • Electrochemical treatment of metal and alloy surfaces (polishing, electroplating) in nontoxic electrolytes.
  • Pilot-plant scale production of ultra fine powders for ceramic materials and products with improved functional properties.
  • Electrochemical and sorption technologies and devices for the removal of non-ferrous metals and toxic compounds from industrial waste.
  • Stable, selective electrocatalysts for fuel cells.

Scientific Cooperation and Technology Transfer

  • IGIC has fully operational Special Design Bureau (SKTB) and Experimental Plant. The Plant has the necessary basic equipment and supply lines to develop technologies and manufacture various types of products, including ultrafine powders for ceramic materials and products with improved functional properties, such as refractory compounds, oxide ceramics, single crystals, membranes, etc.
  • The Institute also appears to have spun several small enterprises (e.g., “Oxide”, which designs and produce oxide ceramics).
