General Information

The Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics (IMBG) of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine has 15 scientific departments and 6 laboratories. IBMG has 429 employees, 210 out of which are classified as “scientists”, of which 147 have earned at least an equivalent of a Ph.D. 27 Ph.D. students are working on their theses.

Institute’s Focus

Scientific research program of the Institute focuses on the investigation of fundamental and applied problems of molecular biology, bioinformatics, genomics, structural biology, and genetics. More specifically, the primary study areas include:

  • Study of proteins and nucleic acids structure and functions
  • Study of translation of genetic information and genetic mutation regularities, the realization of these processes on the level of molecules, cells and organism
  • Investigations in the field of new cell biotechnology and gene technologies
  • Computational study of nucleic acid and protein structure and functioning.

The following areas of science and technology can be identified as IMBG’s core competencies:

  • structural and functional genomics
  • proteomics and protein engineering
  • regulatory systems and signal transductionmechanisms
  • bioinformatics and computational modeling
  • gene and cell biotechnologies, gene therapy and diagnostics.

IMBG has a significant application-oriented research component. At least one third of their departments are actively engaged in applied research. R&D results include certain “ready to use” products, typically, compounds that find use in medical and biological applications, as well as unfinished, or raw materials (e.g., cell biomass); diagnostic methods and tools; genetic engineering and stem cells research; and micro-biosensors.

Valuable Technology Offerings

  • Development of anticancer drugs based on the synthesis of combinational libraries, computer simulation and biological testing (e.g., proteinkinase inhibitors as potential inhibitors of CK2 kinase)
  • Expression vector system providing commercial quantities of biologically active eukaryotic and viral proteins
  • A novel technique of using multi-induced full reflection of light to obtain a high quality IR spectrum of fine films of nucleic acids and nucleoprotein complexes
  • Design and development of novel chemo therapeutic preparations containing active substances with a broad spectrum of activity for clinical use
  • New techniques and molecular markers for DNAanalysis for genotypic identification
  • New methods of DNA diagnostics including prenatal diagnostics
  • Novel micro biosensors including electrochemical and optical immuno- and DNA-sensors
  • KLEPS biological preparation for enhanced plant growth and resistance.

Scientific Cooperation and Technology Transfer

IMBG maintains long-term collaboration with some research laboratories outside of Ukraine and participates in a number of international projects, supported by INTAS, NATO, INCO-COPERNICUS, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Welcome Trust, STCU and others. One instance of such relationship is the development of fluorescent nucleic.
