General Information

The Institute of Materials Science (IMS) was established in 1993 on the basis of scientific laboratories of Physical&Technical Institute and Scientific and Production complex of “Sun” and territorially located in Tashkent city and in Parkent region, 56 km away from Tashkent. Big Solar Furnace of 1000 kW thermal power (BSF) represents a multifunctional optical mechanical complex with the automatic system of control; it consists of the heliostat field and paraboloid concentrator, forming the radiant stationary flux of high density in the focal zone of the concentrator. Currently there are more than 100 employees working in 6 laboratories including 1 Academician and 13 scientists holding a Doctorate Degree.

Institute’s Focus

Institute’s areas of core competencies include the following:

  • Investigation of fundamental processes of influence of concentrated solar radiation with substances;
  • Solution of fundamental problems of synthesis and production on a solar furnace high non-metal materials with given properties and various compounds on their basis;
  • Development of methods of creation and investigation of high temperature solar energetic installations, expansion of functional opportunities of Big Solar Furnace with thermal capacity of 1 megawatt;
  • Development of methods and means of obtaining hydrogen, electrical and thermal energy in Big Solar Furnace;
  • Receiving laser radiation on Big Solar Furnace.

Valuable Technology Offerings

IMS of the Scientific and Production Association “Physics-Sun” proposes solar furnace melted synthesized materials of specified composition on the basis of aluminium, zirconium, hafnium, titanum, magnesium for producing strucural, thermostable, chemically inert ceramics with specific electrophysical, optical and heat properties:

  • Multifunctional ceramics (high temperature heaters, thermocouples, converters, gas burners, oscillators for medicine);
  • Constructive ceramics (printed-circuit boards, pipes, points, incisors);
  • Fireproof ceramics (elements for ceramic engines, strengthening cover);
  • Optical, superconductive and other types of ceramic materials for electronics, chemistry and other branches;
  • Safety device and isolators for ministry of power enterprises;
  • Ceramics pontoon for oil-and-gas industry;
  • Abrasive instruments for machine-building and medical industry, etc.

Scientific Cooperation and Technology Transfer

The Institute has established strong collaborative research linkages with international laboratories and institutes:

  • International Advanced Research Center for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials, India;
  • Gansu Natural Energy Research Institute, China;
  • Tabbin Institute for Metallurgical Studies, Egypt;
  • National Renewable Energy Laboratory, USA;
  • Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA;
  • National Centre for Scientific Research, France, etc.
