General Information

The Institute was established in 1992. Currently there are more than 450 employees working in 20 laboratories. The technical staff includes 4 Academicians, 17 Doctors of Science and 54 PhDs.

Institute’s Focus

Institute’s areas of core competencies include the following:

  • Development of genetic cotton collection on quantitative traits, study of inheritance and variability of economically valuable traits;
  • Development of the collection of cotton world diversity gene pool and its study with the help of cytoembryological, genetic, karyological and anatomic methods;
  • Development of genetic and cellular biotechnology for obtaining of transgenic plants, microorganisms and animals, genetic and engineering means of disease diagnosis;
  • Use of heterozic effect, experimental mutagenesis, traditional and biotechnological method of breeding and seed growing for the development of new cotton varieties;
  • Physiology and biochemistry of plant resistance to diseases and unfavorable environment factors, trials of native and foreign pesticides;
  • Agrobiological investigations for soil fertility rehabilitation;
  • Creation and development of phytopathogenic microorganism’s collection, screening for plant resistance to pathogens.

Valuable Technology Offerings

  • Cotton varieties, (released varieties are cultivated on a large scale);
  • Promotion of promising varieties in elite farms of different regions of Uzbekistan;
  • Recommendations on soil fertility increasing and distribution of crops and pesticides;
  • Genetic engineering services for the purposes of forensic and medical criminal law (determination of parental relationship, identification of person).

The Institute has established strong collaborative research linkages with international laboratories and institutes:

  • USDA-ARS, USA;
  • Department of Soil & Crop Sciences, Texas A&M University, USA;
  • Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, Rutgers University, USA, etc.
