General Information

The Institute of Zoology was established in 1950. The main scientific directions are:

  • Study and development of measures for environmental protection and sustainable use of biodiversity of fauna of Uzbekistan;
  • Development of measures for control of pests in agriculture.

There are serpentarium, insectarium, unic zoo-collections on all groups of fauna of Uzbekistan. Nowadays the Institute employs about 80 scientists including 1 Academician, 6 Doctors of Science and 25 PhDs.

Institute’s Focus

Institute’s areas of core competencies include the following:

  • Conservation of the diversity of fauna in Uzbekistan;
  • Studies of ecology, biology, their commercial importance, sustainable use, protection of rare and vanishing animal species;
  • Development of control methods of pests in agriculture and cattle-breeding;
  • Development of resource-economy integrated technologies of production in the sphere of cattle-breeding and forage crops;
  • National strategy on conservation of biodiversity in Uzbekistan.

Valuable Technology Offerings

  • Vaccine against animal theileriasis;
  • Bioactive substances (snake and arthropod venoms);

Scientific Cooperation and Technology Transfer

The Institute has established strong collaborative research linkages with international laboratories and institutes:

  • Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel;
  • Colorado State University, USA;
  • USDA-ARS, USA;
  • Oregon State University, USA;
  • National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory-Western Ecology Division, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, USA, etc.
