Institute of Seismology

General Information

Institute of Seismology was established in 1966 as a subdivision of Uzbekistan Academy of Sciences. It currently employs 252 staff members including 2 Academicians, 12 Doctors of Science and 19 PhDs. Nowadays the Institute entertains 4 main scientific directions:

  • Seismogeodynamics;
  • Prognosis of earthquakes;
  • Seismic hazard, seismic zoning, seismic risk;
  • Geography.

The Institute has seismic stations equipped with seismometric tools for registration and analysis of seismic events, prognostic seismic stations equipped with tools for earthquake forecasting, special equipment for seismic sounding and study of soil conditions, etc.

Institute’s Focus

Institute’s areas of core competencies include the following:

  • Seismic zoning and microzoning, seismic hazard and seismic risk assessment;
  • Earthquake prediction;
  • Engineering seismology;
  • Geographic science and environmental zoning.

Valuable Technology Offerings

  • Seismic zoning and microzoning maps;
  • Short-term and mid-term prognostic information for governmental agencies;
  • Expect evaluation of design seismic input for construction sites;
  • Geographical atlases and maps.

Scientific Cooperation and Technology Transfer

Institute of Seismology collaborates with CIS and international laboratories and institutes:

  • Join Institute of Physics of the Earth, Russia;
  • Institute of Seismology, Kazakhstan;
  • Institute of Seismology, Kyrgyzstan;
  • Institute of Seismic Resistant Construction and Seismology, Tajikistan;
