Analyzer of the Content Profile of Hydrogen Isotopes in Materials

Description

The analyzer of the contents and concentration profiles for isotopes of hydrogen in various materials was developed on the basis of neutron generator NG-150.

The used nondestructive method is based on measurement of the energy spectra of the recoiled hydrogen nuclei which are knocked out from the analyzed sample by fast neutrons with the energy 14.5 MeV.

The typical energy resolution of a spectrometer is 350 keV. It leads to the following resolutions on depth in the profile of concentration of hydrogen in materials with middle nuclear weights:

  • for hydrogen – 60 microns
  • for deuterium – 22 microns
  • for tritium – 11 microns

Corresponding depths of analyses are:

  • for hydrogen – 1200 microns
  • for deuterium – 500 microns
  • for tritium – 260 microns

Sensitivity of the analysis is limited by the interfering nuclear reactions with the chemical elements, which the matrix of analyzed materials contains, and depends on the statistics of the measurement. Its value is different for various materials containing hydrogen isotopes, and varies over a wide range: from 0.1 at. % up to 10 at. %.

Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages

The new approaches to geometry of measurements, to design of the setup, to choice of the materials of units of the reaction chamber are developed, modules of fast electronics for the spectrometer are created, the software for processing and corrections of data is developed.

It has allowed to create the tool with a limit of sensitivity of hydrogen definition up to 104 ppm, with the depth of analysis 1.0 ÷ 1.5 mm, depth resolution ~3 ÷ 5 %, and duration of one analysis less than 1 hour for minimally determined contents.

Areas of Application

Such a tool is necessary at works on development of constructive materials for nuclear and thermonuclear reactors, in the researches connected with development nanotechnology in hydrogen power engineering, in material science.

Stage of Development

Laboratory installation for definition of the contents and concentration profile of hydrogen isotopes in materials is created and tested.
