International Cooperation in the Field of Protection of the Environment

Issues concerning water quality and quantity have already became critical among the countries of Central Asia - Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, and are rapidly becoming critical in others. The international nature of rivers makes them a natural focal point for cooperative, regional transboundary evolution and management. It is determined first of all by importance of water resource for life of Central Asia population. Besides, the water samples of various river systems of the region have large information and are sensitive to various technogenic impacts. The data obtained during project U107 “Cooperative International Study Contamination in Transboundary Rivers of Central Asia. Navruz II” can be used in further studies, in particular, the ones related to Aral Sea problems and to other ecologically bad zones.

Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages

The broad-scale investigation of radiation situation in region of drainage-basin rivers Amudarya and Syrdarya and their inflows was done:

  • The survey and critical analysis of all possible activities and the natural phenomena of the ecological and radioecological situation in this area;
  • The distribution of studied sites by the degree of their radiation contamination;
  • Ranging of the surveyed sites by degree of their polluted radionuclides and toxic metals, revealing the most polluted sites and objects;
  • The characteristics of the radiation situation in the most contaminated sites and objects;
  • The working out of recommendations on the control and non-proliferation of radioactivity contamination;
  • The creation of database on the quantity and quality of water and radiation contamination of individual sites and objects in the basin of rivers of Aral Sea.

Areas of Application

In the most general sense, the results of this applied research include growing, international, transboundary database on water quality and water quantity in rivers of the Aral Sea basin that can be accessed freely by all participating institutions and governments via the internet. This database will help institutions within countries to develop management strategies for freshwater resources within their own boundaries, and it will help countries to develop management strategies for resources across boundaries. Further, cooperation in the development of the database will lead to an increased ability to cooperate on watershed management, and this has the potential to lead to enhanced regional stability and peace.

Stage of Development

The computer model of quality management of water in the river Syr-Darya is created.
