Enhanced Nuclear Techniques for Material Identification


In Uzbekistan it is important to supply needs of various industries of the Republic (geology, mining industry, agriculture, ecology, medicine, forensics and others) in highly sensitive elemental composition analysis, and in reliable identification of unknown, contraband, including radioactive and nuclear materials. To solve this problem the National Radioanalytical Center has been founded in framework of the STCU project Uzb-109 “Enhanced Nuclear Techniques for Materials Identification”, in the Institute of Nuclear Physics AS RU.

The Center is equipped by 4 computerized gamma-spectrometers supplied with Genie software and HP Germanium detectors, 2 computerized x-ray spectrometers supplied with Genie software and Si(Li) detectors, Solo system α- and β- counters, etc.

By using the mentioned equipment a complex of new unique radioanalytical methods have been developed for determination of composition and identification of materials (food, water, phosphorous fertilizers, vegetation, rocks, ores, human bio-substrates, metals, alloys, materials of unknown composition and origin and others) and measurement of radioactivity of various materials (soils, ores, alloys, construction materials and others).

Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages

The metrological characteristics of the developed methods are exclusively important, which is demonstrated by results of attestation of international standard reference materials. The main advantages are high sensitivity, capability for determination of a large number of elements and isotopes, efficiency and applicability to various materials. These methods are applicable for determination of elements at a wide range of their concentration, and are free of contamination during analysis.

Areas of Application

Elemental analysis and radioactivity measurements for a wide range of various materials and bio-objects. The Center provides the analysis of materials, and their characterization, identification and, in some cases, determination of origin of particular material. Available methods are successfully used in various fields of science and technology, as well as in measures on non-proliferation.

Stage of Development

The Analytical Center possesses modern equipment and a large number of accurate analytical methods. The Center provides analytical services upon request from a large number of organizations of the Republic. The activities on the analysis methods certification and the Center accreditation are carried out.
