New Way of Pest Sterilization Using Technical Gossypol


In the framework of joint research by the group of scientists of Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry and Uzbek Research Institute for Plant Protection it has been developed the new way of sterilization the Lepidoptera pests, larvae of which are soil dwelling. For this purpose there was used technical gossypol that has been obtained by scientists of the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry as a preparation of first cotton seed processing.

Technical gossypol has been added once in small dosages (>1 mg of preparation per 500 g of soil), as a dust into a soil with 4-5 instar larvae of turnip moth (Agrotis segetum Schiff., Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) of first generation that were in amount of 60 larvae per 500g of soil. During experiment there were no any changes in insect growth and development of first 2 generations noticed. However further observations of treated larvae, at usual their feeding and maintaining (as control) showed preparation interfere with insect reproduction of third generation when butterflies oviposited completely sterile eggs. Lower concentrations of technical gossypol preparations (> 0,5mg/500g) notably effected only in fifth and six generations in changes (comparing to control) of butterflies’ sex correlations, the number of male became more than that of female (32±3:19±5). It is considered the insect generation of becoming weak during its further development. The technical gossypol field test on cotton crop demonstrated, that the preparation application as a dust in use rate 2g per 1 hectare can considerably suppress pest number during 2 months.

Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages

The new way of insect sterilization has been developed by adding into a soil with Lepidoptera larvae natural insecticides that mean technical gossypol.

Main advantages:

  • Technical gossypol is less harmful to the environment and humans than synthetic insecticides and sterilants;
  • Easy, not costly in compound obtaining technology and waste less in application;
  • Usage of secondary raw materials;
  • Easy in the compound application as a dust in a very small dosage;
  • Can be used combining with insecticides and baits;
  • Ecologically clean technology.

Areas of Application

The preparation can be used in Integrated Pest Management in all types of agricultural crops against soil dwelling pests.

Stage of Development

Preparation is laboratory and field tested, and accessible for demonstration;

Patenting documents are under preparation stage; There is a prototype for testing;

Search for partners for further cooperation is continuing.
