The Advanced Method for Predator Mites (Acarina: Phytireiidae) Rearing and Their Application Against Crop Pests in Uzbekistan

The conditions and technique for rearing of predator mites: Amblyseius mckenziei, A. сucumeris, and A. swirskii, has been developed and were introduced from other countries into Uzbekistan. The method with consideration of specific climate conditions in Uzbekistan is based on colonization of the Amblyseius species on grain mites which are reared on dewy bran of 2-3 cm level in glass or plastic containers, placed in a bigger iron bath. We have studied the different ways of reproduction ability of A. сucumeris in winter time with additional feeding them divers types of non prey food.

The method of predator mites release technique in cotton field against spider mites, on onions against thrips and in greenhouse tomatoes against whitefly has been developed with taking into account of the level of pest infestation. It has been established that the method is more effective when the entomophage is used at a low pest population.

Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages

For the first time in Uzbekistan the method of rearing of predator mites of Phytoseiidae family on plastic containers with grain mites and wheat bran has been developed. At the same time the methodological recommendations for farmers on the technology of the entomophage laboratory colonization and field application will be provided.

The criteria on regulation of suctorial phytophage population will be developed and thus the assortment of facilities production biolaboratories in Uzbekistan will be enlarged.

Areas of Application

Predator mites of Phytoseiidae family can be applied as biological agents - in biological control for plant protection on various crops against suctorial pests.

Stage of Development

Predators are laboratory studied;
They are tested in laboratory and field conditions;
Recommendation for farmers is issued;
Search for partners for further cooperation is continuing.
