Usage of Coclops for the Control of the Larvae of Blood-Sucking Anopheles Mosquitoes

Description

The problem of the prevention of spread of imported malaria is currently burning in Central Asia, Uzbekistan being one of the states where import of malaria from adjoining and distant states is recorded every year. There are large waterbodies inhabited by blood-sucking mosquitoes, including malaria mosquito. These include shallow-water streams (springs, river canals, drainage collectors, ditches, rice paddies, etc.); depressions pits, holes in the ground. A high density of mosquito larvae and sometimes absence of their predators contribute to a mass emergence of imagoes, the concentration of which is higher in human settlements. The problem of mosquito control can be solved through the cultivation of Cу- clops and their release into neighboring waterbodies.

A comprehensive study of the market, which was implemented at the initial stage of our investigations, showed lack of means controlling mosquitoes, which consisted of chemical preparations, the use of which contaminates the environment.

On the other hand, the cost of insecticides is rather high for their private and large-scale use. A potential market demand for preparations controlling mosquitoes is very high. We studied and selected the most effective larvicidal forms of Cyclops, which can be used on the collective and private basis. They were checked in laboratory and field conditions of Tashkent province (Uzbekistan). The investigations has been devoted to the problem of the search, revealing and amassing the culture of cyclops as bioagents of mosquito control, in order to initiate a gradual production of abovementioned cyclop cultures, which will add up to the list of agents of mosquito control and meet the demand of the population of Uzbekistan.

Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages

We have studied the larvivorous activity of cуclops in three regions of Uzbekistan. Experimental work revealed the most active larviphages, which were tested in field and laboratory conditions and yielded a positive effect.

In addition, this creates new sustainable jobs in the field of control of the transmitters of malaria, as well as other infections.

Other benefits include contribution a solution to the most important problem of human population, who are subject to malaria and its transmitters in Uzbekistan.

Areas of Application

It is possible to settle Cyclops into warm shallow waterbodies, breeding grounds of mosquitoes in the entire territory of Uzbekistan, including rice paddies.

Stage of Development

Larvivorous activity of cуclops has been proved by laboratory (11 cyclop species) and field trials (3 cyclop species); It is showed a possibility of use of Cyclops in the control of mosquito larvae, in particular malaria ones, in the conditions of Uzbekistan.
